Born in Switzerland, Evelyn Pöhler grew up in northern Germany and after graduating from high school learned the carpentry trade. Since the material wood was close to her heart and she wanted to expand her knowledge about wood, a study of the wood industry at the University of Hamburg was obvious. “Back to the roots”: Switzerland has always exerted a great attraction and when a position was advertised at the ETH Zurich, she applied and was able to apply her knowledge of wood as a material in research and in lectures and internships at the Chair of Wood Sciences under Professor Ladislav Kucera. As she enjoyed her work in class and with students, she also attended a postgraduate course in pedagogy and didactics at ETH Zurich and graduated with a Master of Advanced Studies. After 6 years at the university, Evelyn Pöhler moved to EMPA Dübendorf for 6 years and researched nanocellulose fibrils with Jürgen Sell in the Wood Department. Since 2008, she has been responsible for S-WIN at Lignum, the umbrella organization of Swiss forest and wood research, and has led the office with great commitment together with Thomas Näher.
